How can these groups even pretend to be Christian?

Don't read old testament if you're going to apply it to modern times. It's called the old testament for a reason. Christians are not a team, too many are self-proclaiming and not enough are for real. there are several branches of Christianity for a reason, we have different interpretations of the bible, so do not address Christians as a whole, They are too diverse.
